Where does the mouthpiece sit on your lips for french horn?
I’ve been in band camp for the past two weeks, and just this week our sectional teacher for french horn told me i was putting the mouthpiece on my lips wrong. I have been playing the french horn one year, but i’ve also been playing the trumpet two years. They said it had to be 2/3 on the upper lip and 1/3 on the lower. So i tried it, but i can’t really get a bezz as good. What is the proper way of putting the mouth piece. And if it is as i’ve been told, what’s a good way to make a habit of it, and get adjusted faster to a completely different emberchure?
Thanks.. yes i think i can play everything good.. but my teacher will probably still bug me! but i only have her for band camp!
Yes, the tradition is for 2/3 upper lip and 1/3 lower lip.
To make a habit, practice.
But — before you do that, consider:
Not all lips are built the same.
Can you hit all the notes you need to? Can you play the songs through without becoming exhausted? Is your tone quality good? Can you play well while marching? If the answer to all these questions is “yes” then don’t change.
