why do the guys playing french horns in an orchestra put their hands in them?
i thought it might be to muffle the sound, but there is all the other instruments that are playing normally. please no vulgar answers this is a genuine question.

The hand in the bell allowed players to change notes before valves were invented. Today it is Still held that way and it can help a lot in tuning. Also we can change our sound by pushing in or pulling out a bit… if your interested here is a great video of handhorn playing.
