The Hanauma Bay Snorkeling Experience: Some Of The Best Snorkeling Oahu Has To Offer

National Geographic Adventures has recently listed snorkeling at Hanauma Bay as the second most popular aquatic activity in the entire United States!

This is not news to Hawaiians, who have long prided this wonderful, semi-circular bay, with its 1/2-mile stretch of white-sand beach and giant palms. Hanauma Bay was a desired fishing spot for the Ali’i – Hawaiian royalty – and in this century, it has been very renowned among locals and tourists alike for its beach, reef and huge amount of tropical fish, manta rays and green sea turtles.

Boats are prohibited in Hanauma Bay, letting visitors to snorkel directly from the shoreline with Oahu Hanauma Bay Snorkeling Tours! CPA-certified instructors, who are educated in snorkeling and scuba, as well as on the history of the area, the fish and coral, are trained to take little groups snorkeling, snuba and scuba diving on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. These tours are ideal for those new to snorkeling, or who want to fully experience the many wonders of Hanauma Bay with an expert guide.

In addition to transportation to and from the most popular Waikiki hotels, Hanauma Bay Oahu Snorkel offers instruction by a life guard, all snorkel equipment, tram fare, drinks & snacks. Please don’t forget to bring some cash for the $7.50 entrance fee.

Hanauma Bay was named the #1 beach in the United States in Dr. Beach’s 14th annual rankings of American beaches. One of the major reasons for Dr. Beach’s choice was the great environmental preservationof Hanauma Bay. Tours are not allowed on weekends and Hawaii State Holidays, and Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesdays for environmental conservation.

Originally formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma is a marine embayment that is populated with a beautiful coral reef. Hawaii’s state fish, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which means triggerfish with a pig-like short snout in Hawaiian, and the parrotfish are only a couple of the 450-plus species of Hawaiian fish that inhabit the beautiful reef. The trumpet fish, Moorish idols, milletseed butterfly fish, yellow tangs, puffer fish and surgeon fish are some of the other reef fish you will often see while you are swimming.

Hanauma Bay remains among the world’s best snorkeling sites due to its great history of protection, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it is the best Oahu snorkeling. In 1928, the City & County of Honolulu created Koko Head Regional Park, which included Hanauma Bay and Koko Crater, after purchasing them from the Bishop estate for $1. In 1950, the City & County of Honolulu constructed a road to the beach and put in new restrooms and showers in the then-named Hanauma Bay Park. It quickly became a preferred fishing and picnicking destination for Honolulu inhabitants far and near.

By 1967, after repeated misuse of the Hanauma Bay’s natural beauty, the State Division of Fish & Game declared the entire bay a Marine Life Conservation District, and did not allow taking coral, marine life, shells, rocks and even sand. Locals visited less frequently, soon after the establishment of entrance fees, while snorkeling and fish feeding became enormously popular among visiting tourists. In 1990, Friends of Hanauma Bay was formed, providing more thorough protection to the delicate Bay’s resources. Today, feeding fish is strictly forbidden!

Recently renamed Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, the City & County of Honolulu administers that part of Hanauma Bay lying above the high tide line, and the State of Hawai’i Dept. of Land & Natural Resources manages the submarine segment. About a million people presently visit Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve each year.
